Erratic rain hits agriculture in Ganjam

Berhampur: Forgetting previous year’s crop loss, farmers of Ganjam district were welcomed the monsoon with lots of hope for a better crop this season, but the erratic behave of rain left the farmers in doubt for a better yield in the Kharif season, as most of the paddy fields depend on rain water as well.

Due to uneven distribution and deficient rain, most of the blocks has received less than fifty percent rainfall, which affected the progress of agriculture work in the district. Out of that six blocks include Rangeilunda, Patrapur, Sanakhemundi, Digapahandi, Chikiti and some parts of Ganjam Block have affected due to less rain.

Most of the farmers in Ganjam follow planted crop method in rice farming for which adequate water is needed. While June recorded deficient rainfall of 58 mm only, this was very less. The past three weeks of July recorded 143 mm against 220 mm rain in this month. One fourth of total paddy fields in Ganjam have started planting the crop, whereas the condition of the other paddy fields is in the need of sufficient water for progress in the agricultural work.

Rangeilunda has received 71 percent less rainfall, whereas Patrapur, Sanakhemundi, Digapahandi, Chikiti has received 60, 55, 56 and 43 percent less rainfall respectively. The areas of Ganjam block which depend on rain water were severely affected by recent year’s erratic rain, sources said.

The farmers are waiting for the month of August as July ends. If the paddy fields wont get good rain or sufficient water, the situation will be worsen in the near future, lamented the farmers.
