Palli Sabha-X: Tribals again reject mining in Niyamgiri

BHUBANESWAR/RAYAGADA: Reiterating their stand against bauxite mining in the Niyamgiri Hills, the tribals on Wednesday unanimously rejected the mining proposal at the tenth Palli Sabha held at Lakhapadar village of Rayagada district.

Out of the total 130 voters of three villages- Lakhapadar, Patangpadar and Dangamati, 97 (58 women and 39 men) attended the Palli Sabha to express their views against the mining project. The Palli Sabha was supervised by Additional District and Sessions Judge SC Mishra.

“Like our tribal brothers, who rejected mining at the Palli Sabhas in the hill, we strongly oppose the company for mining in the Niyamraja’s abode,” said a villager.

Earlier, eight Palli Sabhas, five in Kalahandi and three in Rayagada district, had outright rejected the mining proposal of Vedanta Company. Only two more Palli Sabhas at Khambesi (August 13) and Karapada (August 19) would be held in the district.
