BHUBANESWAR:
Hijras (eunuchs) in the city, who were casting their ballots in Male or Female
category, exercised their franchises in ‘Others’ category for the first time in
the BMC poll held on Wednesday.
As many as 110 Hijras of Vani
Vihar slum, Salia Sahi and Patrapada casted their votes at the Saheed
Nagar High School
booth of ward no-30.
According to All Orissa Eunuch
Association (AOEA) president Pratap Sahu, it was a long standing demand of their
association before the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Hijras’s voting
right in their own gender.
“Finally, our Hijras became so
happy to cast vote in ‘Others’ category in the BMC poll after getting their
corrected identity cards,” AOEA general secretary Anarkali Kinnar said, adding,
“Our members will contest in the General Election 2014 too.”
