Probe into chlorine gas leak begins


BHUBANESWAR: Inquiry into the chlorine gas leak incident at Niladribihar, started on Sunday here. Out of 20 affected, 15 were discharged and others were under treatment in the Capital Hospital while two other seriously affected due to expose to chlorine gas are under the treatment of a private hospital in the city.
The Government is providing free treatment to the affected people. “The condition of two affected people was very critical, the treatment is on. Their condition is improving,” said Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Capital Hospital Dr S N Swain.
On Saturday evening, the incident happened due to leakage when chlorine was being mixed for water purification in a water tank of PHED near Ishaneswar temple at Niladribihar under Chandrasekharpur Police station limits. While loading the gas, a washer of the cylinder was broken, this led the leakage.
After the leakage, gas immediately spread to the vicinity of a nearby slum area, where people use to come to the tank for taking water. Two women along with one Mukund Digal found unconscious near the tank. After getting information the fire station officials reached at the spot and rescued the people. The affected people rushed to Capital Hospital and admitted in the Disaster Management Ward, said police.
