Dalit Christians 6 day dharna for SC status begin

BHUBANESWAR: Demanding scheduled caste status for dalit Christians and implementation of Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission’s recommendation, members of various Dalit Christian forums in the State sat on a dharna which will continue till December 15 at Lower PMG here on Saturday.

Hundreds of protesters have joined in the dharna on its first day. After a rally the dalit leaders handed over a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and demanded to delink religion from caste and make every dalit equal before law.

“During the last three decades we are demanding this right for the Dalit Christians and Muslims, so without much delay Government should declare SC status for us,” said the State Convenor of National Council of Dalit Christian Kumar Prashant to The Pioneer.
The Dalit Christians demanded SC status for them, which is a Constitutional right of the dalits and which is also recommended by the Mishra commission. Almost all political parties have expressed support to their demand in public, but why the Government is not implementing the recommendation for SC status to the dalit Christians is a big question, they said.
