BHUBANESWAR: The doyen of theatre Ratan Thiyam has been conferred on Bharat Muni Samman for the year 2011. He was felicited for his lifetime contribution towards drama and theatre by Tourism and Culture Minister of Odisha Prafulla Samal on the colourful concluding evening of 4th Bharat Muni Mahotsav here on Friday.
The festival held at Rabindra Mandap was hosted by a city-based Odishi dance institution Kalingayana Touryatrikam. Stellar performances of Odishi dancers, like Kumkum Mohanty and Sujata Mishra, Guwahati-based Sattriya dancer Meernanda Barthakur and internationally acclaimed Saxophonist and composer George Brooks, mesmerised audience of the concluding evening of the festival.
Thiyam is the fourth person to get the Samman after veteran classical dancer Thanka Mani, renowned Kathak dancer Birju Maharaj and the doyen of classical music Pandit Yashraj. The Samman was dedicated to the ancient scholar Bharata, whose immortal work ‘Natya Shastra’ is regarded as an epic of drama and theatre.
