Palli Sabha-XI: Tribals reject mining in Niyamgiri again

BHUBANESWAR/RAYAGADA: Reiterating their stand against bauxite mining in the Niyamgiri Hills, the tribals on Tuesday unanimously rejected the mining proposal at the eleventh Palli Sabha held at Khembesi village of Rayagada district.

Out of the total 72 voters of the village, 50 (13 men, 37 women) attended the Palli Sabha to express their views on their religious and cultural rights over the hills. The tribals voted against the beleaguered proposal of Vedanta Company for bauxite mining in the hill. The Palli Sabha was supervised by Additional District and Sessions Judge SC Mishra.

Earlier, ten Palli Sabhas, five in Kalahandi and five in Rayagada district, had outright rejected the mining proposal of the company. Only one more Palli Sabhas at Karapada (August 19) would be held in the district.

After the continuous rejection by the tribals in the Palli Sabhas, the Vedanta Company has started another way to feed its bauxite starved Lanjigarh refinery, sources said.
