Hindol fire accident toll rises to four

DHENKANAL: In the fire accident at Kansara village of Hindol sub-division in Dhenkanal district, death toll increased to four as another two persons out of three patients shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack succumbed to their injuries on Saturday. They were identified as Sarbeswar Behera (45) and Golak Behera (42) of the village. The condition of the third person Dushasan Behera was very critical as 70 per cent of the body was burnt.

Two persons Lochan Amat (60) and his son Bulu (20) were charred to death and six others sustained to burn injuries on Friday. Seriously injured Tara Amat (55), wife of Lochan Amat, was going under treatment in Anugul Government hospital.

On the day of the incident, Amat and his son were grinding explosive powders for making fire crackers in their house. While making the explosive powder, it exploded and caught fire in the house. Within few hours, the fire spread rapidly in the area, about 60 houses comprising around 200 rooms were gutted in the mishap. It took long hours for the fire tenders to control the blaze.

District officials on Saturday distributed cooked food, polythene, dry foods and rice during their visit to the affected village. Other social organisations near the village have also distributed food materials and cloth to the affected families of the gutted village.

The fire cracker manufacturing unit in the village was running by Lochana Amat and his son illegally without license for twenty years, sources said.
