CUTTACK/BHUBANESWAR: After consuming poisonous alcohol, 29 people died till today at Cuttack. The affected persons had consumed alcohol from a shop at Mahidharpada in Cuttack district including some other persons from Bhingarpur Panchayat and Balianta area of the district. They were rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment, but doctors could not succeed to save 29 lives from the mouth of the killer brew.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik ordered judicial probe into the matter today. But Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee demanded Lokpal probe into the matter instead of judicial probe. Regarding this matter, Naveen called a emergency meeting to discuss on this issue today.

Again this issue fueled the Congress and other opposition parties to drag the Government into trouble. After the Pipili gang-rape case, the hooch tragedy has imposed pressure on Government. BJP and Congress blockade the road today at Bramhalajharilo and Badajharilo respectively condemning Government’s failure to stop illegal brewing of liquor.

Meanwhile, the Commissionerate police and the district collector of Cuttack howefver today said that the tragedy struck due to a deadly mixture of as country liquor had been mixed with some highly intoxicating substances produced by a pharmaceutical company, Eastern India Pharmaceutical at Rasulgarh in Bhubaneswar. The Commissionerate police conducted raids on the company and seized a few bottles of containing the deadly substance. "The killer brew contained about 60 percent spirits,"said B K Shrama, Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissioner. The police has arrested three persons, Umakanta Rath, the owner of the company, his daughter-in-law and the manager in this connection.

The police said that the company had obtained licence from the excise department only a fortnight ago to procure rectified spirit. But the company used the spirit for production of the liquid that was added to the killer brew.
