Septuagenarian scribe worried over police inaction

CUTTACK: Every senior citizen wants peace and tranquility after a long days working life and accordingly they plan their retirement time to spend happily with family and friends. But, it is a dream for a septuagenarian scribe, now a columnist and former DFO Nadiya Chand Kanungo, who spends his days among fear and mental pressure from some persons staying inside the premises of house let out to a chicken dealer and his brother.

Kanungo, a resident of Madhusudan Nagar in Tulasipur area of Cuttack city, lives with his family comprising his wife and children in his house, has been attacked for four times by tenants staying inside his campus of his house. He has of late fallen foul with these tenants who want unauthorised use of electricity which the owner has been resisting. And this had led to a bitter situation November 26 last year.

According to Kanungo, recently on February 2 morning, some hooligans including tenants Prakash Sahu and Prahlad Sahu, Dullu, Nandu Singh and others attacked him with his wife during cleaning of house premises. Later, they attacked his son Bibhudatta, an advocate, entering his house, he added.

“I was beaten up by the hooligans and my left eye got injured in a blow by one Dullu who was present there at that time. One old woman Alaka Mitra and a lady relative to the chicken dealer have been staying in our house from that day of the incident. Now we are hopeless, we could not enter into the house,” said Kanungo.

It may be noted that the house was in the name of Kanungo’s brother before his death. After his death Kanungo’s son became the owner as legal heir, but domestic helper of the house living inside the campus came with Alaka, a relative of previous house owner, to demand the house.

“If they want the house go to the court and fight for that, why they are attacking us with local goons and their relatives,” he said. Kanungo said that he informed in a written letter to the Chief Minister, Home Secretary, Human Rights Commission, DGP, Commissioner of Police, Cuttack DCP and also State Commission for Women by his wife to help them, but still police have not taken any appropriate action on his matter, he alleged.

“The persons are using the old women as shields to protect them from the police and they are illegally residing in the house,” Kanungo said. When we contacted, Cuttack DCP S Praveen Kumar informed that they have forwarded 11 people to the court in the case from both sides.

On the other hand, Kanungo alleged that the police insist them to give electricity to the tenants, to give land for them and to do compromise with the tenants and to the old woman who is demanding the house, which is an unfortunate incident.
