Strong agricultural policy can stop farmer suicide: BJP Krushak Morcha


BHUBANESWAR: In a three day march ‘Odisha Banchao’ started from Puri, State BJP Krushak Morcha reached at Lower PMG here on Monday demanding a strong agricultural policy in the State to stop farmer suicide.
The members of the Morcha opined at the rally that due to lack of foresightedness and strong agricultural policy of the Central as well as State Government, 255 farmer committed suicide in the State during the years. “Facing lot of problems like drought, flood, untimely rain, distress sells of paddy, acute shortage of seeds and fertilizers in time, the farmers have been facing crop loss. After the crop loss, huge debt forces them to take the strong decision of suicide. So immediately Government should take steps to tackle this problem in a priority basis,” the Morcha said.
The Morcha demanded the Government should waive the debts from the farmers and declare compensation Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased farmers. Among other demand, irrigation facility, increasing of Minimum Support Price (MSP) of rice to Rs 1500 per quintal, to declare crop loss compensation Rs 15,000 per acre, to provide free seeds and fertiliser and management of flood water during the flood time.
The rally lead by State president of the Morcha Maheswar Sahu, National vice-president Sri Krushna Jagdev, secretary Anil Sharma, State secretary Jadumani Panigrahy while other members of the Morcha participated in the rally.
