BJP demands withdrawal of police from Govindpur

BHUBANESWAR: A team of 22 members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by State vice-president Ashok Sahu visited Govindpur village in Jagatsingpur district to make an on the spot assessment of the law and order situation emerged due to forcible demolition of the betel vines by the district administration on Tuesday.

The BJP leaders discussed with the SP and the Collector present over there and appealed them not to precipitate the situation by using police force. Later, the situation was calmed down when the Collector assured them to withdraw the police.

There is total reign of fear and terror perpetrated by the State Government, Sahu said. He demanded immediate legal action against the Land Officer of the IDCO, who being a civilian assaulted the picketers. “There is no urgency of such an operation when the matter is pending for final decision before the National Green Tribunal,” said Sahu.

As there is no MoU between the State Government and the Posco, for whom the district administration is doing the demolition drive, Sahu asked. Further BJP alleged that the Chief Minister is frantically busy in collection spree to meet the fund requirement in coming general elections.

BJP leaders demanded immediate withdrawal of the deployment of armed police from the area and not to presume any operation without the concurrence of the ‘Gramsabha’ is concerned. Among others, State vice-president Bijaya Laxmi Mishra, State SC Morcha president Baidhar Mallick and party members were present.
