Farmer suicide: BJP demands Rs 5 l ex-gratia for victim’s family



BHUBANESWAR: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Friday demanded Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for the family of a farmer in Boudh district who had committed suicide at his farmland by consuming pesticide. After visiting the village of the deceased farmer, the BJP made the demand here.

A high-level fact-finding delegation led by State BJP Krushak Morcha (BKM) president Maheswar Sahu visited Badhigaon in the district on Thursday to investigate the reason of the suicide. According to the fact-finding team, farmer Utsav Pradhan (70) had witnessed huge crop loss due to untimely rain last year. Though the State Government had declared compensation for the crop loss, but he didn’t get it. He lost his mental balance and took the extreme step to end his life by consuming poison.

He was rushed to the local hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead. The police lodged a unnatural death case and sent the body for postmortem, said the villagers to the fact-finding team. Among others, BKM vice-president Rajkishore Mendli, Morcha executive body member Pradumna Dhal, BJP district president Manoranjan Das, district secretary Baikuntha Pradhan and BJP Boudh block president Satyananda Pande went with the delegation.
