PARADIP: On the second day of the
land acquisition drive for the proposed Posco steel plant, the district
administration dismantled around ten betel vines amid tension in the Govindpur
area in Jagatsinghpur district on Monday. With the active support of the
owners, the administration peacefully took apart the betel vines in the
presence of the police, said district collector Satya Kumar Mallick.
On the second day, the situation
was quite peaceful and suitable for the administration to continue the land
acquisition process. The district collector and Superintendent of Police discussed
with the betel vine owners and settled the issue amicably to carry forward the
acquisition drive. Farmers like Ashok Vardhan and Manindra Rout helped the
administration for the smooth and peaceful acquisition of land.
On the other hand, the anti-Posco
groups including Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) led by its president
Abhaya Sahoo, local MP Bibhu Prasad Tarai along with hundreds of villagers
including women and children sat in dharna at Balitikira on the outskirts of
Dhinkia village. Sahoo said that the group would not allow the administration
to enter into their villages.
As many as 14 platoons of police
force were deployed in the area to keep eye on the area. Top officials of the
district administration are on the spot to take stock of the situation.
Notably, the Industrial
Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) authority had already acquired
2,000 acres of land in Gadakujang and Nuagaon Panchayat two years ago. They
have the target of acquiring 700 more acres of land in Gobindapur village
within this month.
