--Int’l orgs urge State Govt to
stop police action against agitators
BHUBANESWAR:
International organisations led by the Friends of the Earth International, a
federation of autonomous environmental organisations working in 76 countries,
have appealed to Prime Minster Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik
to stop barbaric action against anti-Posco agitators at Govindpur area in
Jagatsinghpur district.
The organisations said the
barbaric actions of the State police and paramilitary forces against the
protestors at the proposed Posco project area is clearly a violation of the
laws of India
and international legal standards.
“We have come to know that male
paramilitary forces were mercilessly beating up even women villagers and
children, the organisation said, adding, “Several women were badly injured. The
police have also started smashing betel vines and cutting the trees on village
lands forcefully.”
They also stated that the
National Green Tribunal of India has already suspended the environment
clearance to the proposed Posco project, but why the madness to acquire the
lands evicting poor farmers of the area.
They appealed to the Government
to urgently stop the police brutality, withdrawal of the police force, and to
initiate an inquiry into the human rights violations by the police.
