Tusker damages houses, crops in J’suguda

JHARSUGUDA: A wild tusker went on rampage at a village in Jharsuguda district on Saturday morning, damaging 15-20 houses and triggering panic among the residents of the village. The wild animal also destroyed vegetable crops in the area, sources said.

The incident happened at Jammal village of Keldamal Grampanchayat under Kolabira forest range in the district. The tusker ate packaged paddy by damaging houses and destroyed the crops by entering into farm lands. The local farmers including Loknath Kisan, Sitaram Kisan and Ramachandra Kharsel were highly affected due to the damage.

“We are trying to drive away the tusker from the village immediately. We will write to the State Government urging compensation for the affected farmers,” said Kolabira forest ranger HS Choudhury.

The locals went to the local forest office and demanded compensation for their damaged crop and houses. The jumbo menace is a serious problem in the blocks like Kolabira, Kirimira and Laikera in the district, locals said.
