--Public procurement in India
constitutes 30% of GDP

“Effective competition can benefit the public treasury to anything in between
17 per cent and 43 per cent,” said Competition Commission of India (CCI)
Director General AK Chauhan while inaugurating the three-day training programme
on Procurement and Contracts Management organised by National Productivity
Council (NPC) here on Tuesday.
Chauhan said the importance of
procurement and contracts management in India
especially for public procurement and the foremost objective of CCI is to
ensure the protection of rights of consumers. He said that public procurement
in India
constitutes around 30 per cent of GDP and it
was about Rs 7 lakh crore in the financial year 2011-12.
On Odisha perspective, Chauhan
revealed that the CCI is investigating into three cases from the State including
mining case, dispute of pharmaceutical company and regarding film distribution
rights. “As the cases are under investigation and the matter of subjudice, I
couldn’t comment on it,” he said, adding, “But in future, we will take more
cases to promote and sustain competition in the markets of the State.”
NPC director S Pal welcoming the
delegate highlighted the process of designing and monitoring of procurement and
contracts management. Keeping in view of the demands of various industries and
organisation, he stated that NPC is mulling to establish procurement and
contracts management cell in order to facilitate this type of activity in
economy.
Among others, NPC’s State head RK
Padhy, Prof Sadananda Sahu, about 40 delegates from various Central and State
PSU and various Government departments across the country attended the program.
