BHUBANESWAR: The Kalash on the crest of the Lingaraj
temple, where a crack was found recently, would be repaired without replacing
the century-old monument, said the technical expert team of the Archeological
Survey of India (ASI) after examining the crack here on Saturday.
An 11-membered expert team for
the second time examined the intensity of the crack on the Kalash and suggested for necessary repair. “We will try to preserve
the monument as it is an ancient art,” said ASI team member AK Patel.
Stating the reason of the crack,
Lingaraj Temple Administration executive officer Abanikanta Patnaik said that
heat of the flames of Mahadeep
expands the crest and squeezes in the winter time and the frequent thermal expansion
creates crack. Ageing problem was also a problem for creating crack, he added.
On December 29 last year, the ASI
technical expert team had visited the shrine and found eight-inch crack on the
Dadhi Nauti (crest) of the temple. The team had suggested for replacement of a
strong metal which could bear the heat.
