Wild bear mowed down in Ganjam



BRAHMAPUR: A wild bear was killed and a cub got critically injured when a speeding train hit them at Kantapada, 40 km from here, under Rambha police station in Ganjam district on Saturday night. The incident happened near Subalaya where six elephants were mowed down by the Chennai-bound Coromandel Super Fast Express on December 30.

According to the forest officials, the incident happened while the animals were crossing the railway line. The officials have sent carcasses of the animals for autopsy.

Recently, Forest Department and Railway had an altercation over the death of six elephants near Subalaya in the district. Even Minister of Union Forest and Environment Minister Jayanthi Natrajan and the State Government had written letter to the Railway Minister to reduce the speed limit of trains at the elephant crossing zone in the vulnerable areas in the State.
