RAYAGADA: The body of the 16-year-old
gang-rape victim, who died at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam,
was cremated here on Wednesday. After the body reached here at around 3.30 pm, people from different walks paid
their last tributes to the girl at her Anjipeta home.
The body of the victim was immediately
taken to the crematorium near Sirikona where leaders of different political
parties, students, women and social activists were present. As she was an orphan,
her uncle lit the funeral pyre.
The minor, who belongs to
Anjipetta area in the district, had attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze
the very next day after she was allegedly gangraped by four persons on the
outskirts of Rayagada town on January 2. About 70 per cent of her body was
burnt and she was immediately shifted to the Care
Hospital in Vishakapatnam on
January 7 for her treatment where she died on Tuesday.
No untoward incident happened as
was expected, said the police. The Association of Photocopiers observed a
bandh. Many people expected the District Collector’s presence at Anjipetta, but
he didn’t arrive there. Many opined an exemplary punishment for the culprits.
The local scribes appealed the Collector to handover the ex-gratia of Rs 10
lakh to the next kin of the deceased girl, her younger sister.
The death of the victim shocked
the local people. The angry locals particularly women and girls demanded
stringent action against the accused by awarding them exemplary punishment. Women
Congress workers held a candle light meet at the capital city under the
leadership of its president Bijaylaxmi Sahu as a tribute to the girl and
demanded stringent action against the rapists.
