Another firing takes place in city, one arrested



--Public, police show courage to nab armed miscreants

BHUBANESWAR: A week after the Unit-6 firing case in city, another firing incident took place in the Nageswartangi colony under Lingaraj police station limit here on Friday. The local people handed over the main accused to the Police after nabbing him from the spot.

According to the police, two bike-borne miscreants suddenly came to the front of the house of Jitendra Patnaik (62) at Nageswartangi colony and tried to snatch away the gold chain of Patnaik’s wife Smita when she was sweeping near the gate of her house.

While snatching, Smita captured one accused and cried for help. Patnaik came to the spot after hearing the screaming of his wife, but he was attacked by the armed miscreant. At the very moment, Patnaik’s neighbor Kartik Maharana came to the rescue of Patnaik couple, but he received to bullets in his leg while protesting the miscreants. Later, the people of the colony gathered there and nabbed the armed miscreant, but the second one fled from the spot, said the police.

“We arrested a person in connection with the incident. After interrogation, the other accused can be nabbed,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Nitinjit Singh.

Maharana was rushed to the Capital Hospital and then shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. He was lauded by the Commissionerate Police for his bravery to nab the armed looter. Sources said the city police are planning to recommend Maharana’s name for award.

In another incident, the Khandagiri IIC Sanjeev Satpathy, Sub Inspector Daya Nayak and the Commissionerate Police’s special squad led by Inspector Alok Jena busted the armed anti-social gang by chasing from Kalinga Vihar here to Press Chhak at Cuttack.

Fire exchange took place between the police and anti-socials at Press Chhak, but the police meticulously fought back and arrested three persons. Two bikes, a bhujali, two pistols with four live bullets have been seized from the miscreants. Main accused Baidhar Behera alias Baya, Rajkishore Mohapatra and Satyabrata Nayak alias Bapi all belonged to Bhadrak district were arrested and forwarded to the court on Friday while other two miscreants Manoranjan Pani and Anil Kumar both from the Bhadrak district are still absconding. The police started manhunt to nab the culprits.
