State not sensitive to address women issues: NCW

BHUBANESWAR: “The Odisha Government is not sensitive to address issues like violence against women,” alleged National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma here on Thursday.

Sharma said the State Government has not taken any step on their recommendations in the case of Dr Madhabilata Pradhan murder which clearly shows the insensitive attitude of the State Government towards women issues.

She further said the State has seen two-fold rise in rape cases within two year. The rape cases have been increased from 750 in 2010 to more than 1500 in 2012 which is alarming, she added. Odisha is in third place within the country in rape and number one in child rape, she quoted the data of a national-level report.

Sharma said that a three-member team would visit Odisha on July 17 to investigate into the marine drive blind girl rape case. She said the Government should take appropriate steps for the safety of the women in the State like police patrolling in the sensitive tourist places in the marine drive.

The commission would write a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik regarding the serious issues related to violence against women, she revealed.
