Nun gang-rape case: Woman arrested for helping accused



PHULBANI: A woman of Bramhanigaon area in Kandhamal district was arrested on Tuesday for assisting two men for gang-rapping cousin sister, a nun, at Brahmapur railway station area.

The arrested woman was identified as Nalini Subhasunder (32), a cousin of the 28-year-old victim, the police said. Nalini was arrested from Mohana in Gajapati district.

The victim nun was undergoing training in Chennai for last few months and she immediately returned after getting a call from her cousin who had told that her mother was ill. She was received by her cousin Jotindra Sobhasundar and his two friends at Brahmapur railway station on July 5. The three accused picked her from the station and kept her at different undisclosed places before raping her repeatedly between July 5 and 11, said the police.

The victim lodged a complaint on July 13 at Bamunigaon police station acting on which police arrested the duo and sent them to jail on Monday. A medical examination has been conducted on the victim at a hospital in Brahmapur.

Notably, a 28-year Catholic nun was allegedly raped during the Kandhamal violence in 2008 which created hue and cry within the country.
