Activists stir against increasing rape case in State

BHUBANESWAR: Opposing Government’s inaction and political leader’s involvement in Pipili and other mass rape cases in the State, various women organisations, political parties and youth masses have raised their voice regarding recent severe human right violations against women in different places of the State.

Regarding this case Rutupurna Mohanty of Maa Ghar Foundation Trust, an organisation working for women’s right, said the Government failed to take action against the culprits of the mass rape incidents. Recently, five mass rapes were taken place at Barmunda bus stand, Baliapal, Sardeipur, Pipili and Bhadrak, which is a shame for the State Government, she added.

“As the chief of Home Ministry, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Child and Women Development Minister should give clarification on this matter. Keeping mum is not the answer. If the Government would not take any exemplary action against the culprits within seven days, we will start statewide agitation and call on women to boycott the forthcoming panchayat poll,” said Mohanty at a Press meet here on Thursday.

Odisha Nagarika Samaj and Purvasenani Sangh with Maa Ghar foundation in a ten-point chartered demand before the Government, they asked for five lakh compensation for the families of the victim, to suspend the SPs for negligence in duty, to strengthen the women and child desks for the security of the vulnerable group -women and children, to take actions against political leaders who are giving protection to the culprits and other demands.

Similarly, women leaders of BJP party also protested against the police as well as Government inaction in the incident. They have demanded 10 lakh compensation, resignation of Agriculture Minister and Pipili MLA Pradeep Maharathy accusing his involvement in Pipili mass rape case, CBI inquiry into the matter and proper action against the culprits.

From capital to Pipili and in Bhadrak, everywhere the voice of protest against the heinous work was coming up on Thursday. Various protest rallies and processions were being organised by activists and various organisations in the capital. Youth Congress blocked the Pipili-Bhubaneswar main road and burnt the effigy of Minister Padeep Maharathy accusing his involvement in the case.
