Lioness on the loose brought back

BHUBANESWAR: After seventeen hours of rescue operation, Nandankanan authority successfully captured escaped lioness Supriya on Wednesday from a swampy area behind the enclosure of Nandankanan Zoo.
“After successfully tranquilising the lioness, our Zoo officials have taken her to Zoo hospital for treatment as she was out of the Zoo for two days without food and water and spent winter nights with rain,” said Deputy Director of the Zoo Siba Narayan Mohapatra.
Due to rain on Tuesday, the Zoo officials could not be captured Supriya. Though, the officials tried to tranquilise the animal for three times, but they had failed. The officials had kept close watch over the area, where the lioness was spotted during the operation.
The lioness had escaped from enclosure 29-B by pushing the iron railing, which was very loose, and got into the forest area behind the enclosure. A team was formed for the rescue operation immediately and the authority immediately evacuated the visitors, who had already purchased tickets and entered the zoo.
This was not for the first time happening in the Zoo, before the Zoo have witnessed three incidents since 2000. In November, 2011, another two-year-old tigress, Megha, managed to escape from her enclosure. In September, 2000, a tiger fled from the Zoo before he was being recaptured and in February, 2000, a white tiger killed a man after escaping from enclosure, sources said.
