BHUBANESWAR: In a fire broke out on Friday in a general compartment of Chennai-Howrah Coromandel Express near Lingaraj Station here, hundreds of passengers were narrowly escaped from the mouth of flames which were extinguished before they could spread to other bogies of the train.

The fire break out was taken place around 5 am in the morning on Friday when the Superfast Express train was proceeding towards Bhubaneswar main station. The fire was located at the general compartment near the engine, informed officials of East Coast Railway (ECoR).

Most of the inner parts of the compartment were burnt but no injury was reported as the fire brigade immediately reached there and within few minutes the fire was controlled, but the actual reason of the fire break out was not revealed.

After seeing fire in the compartment, some passengers had pulled the emergency chain to stop the train, but at that time some portions were already burnt. The passengers got down soon after the train stopped, said a boarded passenger.

Inquiry has been ordered into the incident and we will check out the cause of fire break out. No one was injured in the accident, said Sudarshan Nayak Chief Safety Commissioner of the ECoR. Preliminary information indicated that the fire might have erupted due to carelessness of some traveller and an inquiry has been ordered into the incident, he added. After few hours the train proceeded to Howrah.
