Untimely rain creates havoc in western Odisha


BHAWANIPATNA/SAMBALPUR: Untimely rain started from Monday have created havoc in western Odisha as hailstorm hit the public life along with standing vegetable crop in Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Deogarh and Sonepur district.
On Monday, rainfall was recorded as Telkoi received 70mm, Kamakshyanagar 60mm Nayagarh 50mm, Bhubaneswar 14.8mm and Cuttack 20mm rainfall respectively. Besides capital and north Odisha, thunderstorm and hailstorm created havoc in western Odisha. The rain due to low pressure will continue for 24 hours.
In Kalahandi, Sonepur and Sambalpur, huge destruction was reported due to thunderstorm and hailstorm in the respective districts. Some houses were broken and vegetable crop was damaged due to this untimely rain and hailstorm. Most of the farmers from these districts said that their standing vegetable crops, including cauliflower, tomato, cabbage, spinach, coriander leaves, onion, cow peas, and other leafy vegetables have been completely damaged.
In some places of Kalahandi district, huge amount of hailstorm was received and deposited on the vegetable and paddy fields. Big trees and electric pole were rooted out in some places. Some thatched houses were also damaged and some peoples were also injured due to the hailstorm.
Birmaharajpur of Sonepur district and Redhakhol and Naktideula blocks of Sambalpur district witnessed heavy loss. More than hundred of houses were damaged and the hailstorm has injured many more.
