BHUBANESWAR: Like every year, the annual bird survey in Chilika Lake was conducted on Sunday with around 80 experts and 17 volunteer organisations including Ornithologists of the OUAT, Bombay Natural History Society, National Board of Wildlife and College of Veterinary Science were engaged in direct count in the largest brackish lake in Asia.
“We have already received the census data from every part of Chilika, but it would take time to estimate the number of birds and the species that visited the lake this winter,” said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Chilika Wildlife Division B P Acharya to The Pioneer.
Chilika, which is known as the heaven-on-earth for the migratory foreign birds, is the shelter house for birds of more than hundred of species. Last winter, 8, 04,452 birds of 169 species took shelter in the lake. The1100-sq km vast lake was divided into 17 sections to count the number of birds and the participants were trained in census operations at Chandraput.
