--Nurses strike enters 4th day,
hospital services badly affected
BHUBANESWAR:
More than hundred members of the All Odisha Contractual Nurses Association
(AOCNA) were arrested by the police when they attempted to gherao the residences
of the Health Minister and the Chief Minister here on Wednesday. After three
days strike in front of the Government hospitals and dharna in front of the
State Assembly, the nurses attempted to gherao the residences according to
their plan.
According to the AOCNA president
Gangadhar Panigrahy, they came to gherao the Health Minister’s house following
the failure of the discussion with Minister of Finance Prafulla Ghadei. The nurses
moved towards the residences of the Health Minister and the Chief Minister
demanding regularisation of services and hike in salary.
The argument took place between the
police and the nurses while moving to wards residences. The Commissionerate
Police arrested many agitated nurses from the spot. Few of them fainted during
the agitation were later rushed to the nearby hospital.
The nurses have started
indefinite dharna in front of the State Assembly from Tuesday demanding
regularisation of services and hike in salary. The strike by contractual nurses
entered the fourth day on Wednesday while the services in Government hospitals
across the State were affected and patients lay helpless.
Due to strike by near about 2,000
nurses working in the three medical college hospitals and other Government
hospitals, services in hospitals were badly affected. The hospital authorities
tried to somehow manage work engaging nursing students as an alternative.
