BHUBANESWAR: Members of the BJP
Krushak Morcha (BKM) on Saturday met the family members of the deceased farmer
Vyasa Narayan Gahir (50) of Kurumapuri under Komna block in Nuapada district
who committed suicide by hanging himself in his home on July 24 due to crop
loss and failing to repay bank loans.
Gahir had four acres of
cultivable land by which he runs his kitchen. But, he lost his crop during last
three year due to drought. On the other hand, Gahir failed to repay bank loan
as he had taken Rs 44,000 loan from the State Bank of India ’s
Nuapada Branch, Rs 40,000 from Utkal Gramya Bank and Rs 20,000 from Lakhna
Co-operative Society. These two reasons were behind the suicide of the farmer,
said the villagers and family members of the deceased.
A seven-member delegation led by BKM
State president Maheswar Sahu
started an inquiry into the reason of the suicide by visiting the village and
meeting the family members. The BKM members demanded the Government should
provide Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the deceased’s family, employment for a
member of Gahir, widow pension to deceased’s wife and one house in the ‘Mo
Kudia’ scheme.
