BRAHMAPUR: Within the stipulated
time of five years, Andhra Pradesh Government completed the Mahendratanaya
project at Meliaputti in Srikakulam district of the State, but our Government yet
to complete the tender process for the Mahendratanaya project at Champapur in
Gajapati district though four years have already passed, said Convener of
Mahendratanaya Bachao Andolan Srikant Padhi.
It may be noted that violating
the treaty which was signed in 1962 with Odisha, the Andhra Pradesh Government
laid foundation stone in 2007 to construct a dam over the Mahendratanaya
River at Meliaputti. Many discussions
and political dialogues in between the two States had continued, but the Andhra
Government didn’t listen to Odisha and constructed the dam. To counter the
neighbouring State, the Odisha Government laid foundation stone of
‘Mahendratanaya Irrigation Project’ on April
30, 2008.
“Sorry to say that our State
Government yet to start the project at the proposed place of Dambapur and
Champapur in Gajapati district as our Government’s work is going not even
snail’s pace,” said Padhi. Due to lack of interest of the State Government, the
project work could not be started like Andhra Pradesh, he added.
In Dambapur project, Padhi said, only
three junior engineers and an assistant engineer are working which is not sufficient
for such projects. These two projects would have given the right answer of
Andhra’s arbitrary behaviour, he added.
“We have written letters to the
Chief Secretary, Chief Minister and other concerned officials to take immediate
measures to complete the project. If the Government don’t respond us, we will
sit in dharna,” Padhi said.
