BHUBANESWAR: Samajwadi Party Odisha State Committee has demanded action against Hindalco at Sambalpur for violating its Ash Pond Management Guidelines and compensation to the farmers whose crops have been damaged due to ash pond water. Following a discussion with the member secretary of Odisha State Pollution Control Board on Friday, the party urged him to take appropriate measures in the case.
After gas leak from a plant of
the company in the month of July and two times over flow of ash pond water in
the month of August, the farming lands of the nearby areas of the plant were
badly affected by the toxic ash pond water. “The company didn’t take any
measures after the incident and massive damage of crops which reflects the
casual and careless attitude of the said company as well as Pollution Control
Board and District Administration,” said Samajwadi Party State Committee
president Rabi Behera.
Similarly, Odisha State Council of
Communist Party India demanded Rs 1 lakh per acre as compensation to the
farmers of the area. It also demanded the Government should take stringent
action against the company for neglect in ash pond management.
