BARIPADA: Former Baripada MLA and
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Bimal Lochan Das was on Wednesday sentenced to
two-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 25,000 for illegal sanction of
loans during his tenure as president of Baripada Urban Co-operative Bank. Baripada
Chief Judicial Magistrate gave the final verdict after hearing the case.
In 2005, two vigilance cases had
been registered against Das for illegal sanction of loans as president of
Baripada Urban Co-operative Bank and the other for giving direct appointments
to certain employees in the said Bank. The next president of the bank made the
allegation and lodged complaint against Das when he was the MLA of Baripada.
The complainant had alleged that
around Rs 7 crore was embezzled during Das’s period for which the bank got loss.
After getting the audit report, the then president of the bank lodged the
complaint in 2005.
“After special audit, it was
proved that the MLA was involved in the case. After hearing the case the CJM
gave his verdict against five persons including Das,” said Assistant Government
Advocate KC Das.
