High-level meet to control killing of wild animals in Ganjam



--Three arrested for electrocuting two elephants in Khallikote range

BRAHMAPUR: Following the death of five elephants due to electrocution within a fortnight in different forest ranges of Ganjam district, a high-level meeting of forest officials, district administration and electricity department was held on Tuesday. Principal Secretary of State Forest Department Raj Kumar Sharma and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Wildlife JD Sharma were present in the meeting.

The top officials after discussing on illegal hooking of electricity directed the district-level officials of the Forest Department along with electric engineers to have joint inspections in every village in a regular basis. Speaking on the planning of control measures, Brahmapur DFO Sudhansu Sekher Mishra said that a coordination meet of the forest officials and electricity department will be held in every month. Stringent actions will be taken against the culprits, he added.

Mishra informed that two persons have been arrested for killing of wild animals in Ghumusar forest range and forwarded to the court. Due to illegal hooking from the electric polls, the incidents are happening and in such cases the electricity department has to be aware too, he stated.

On the other hand, the forest officials of Khallikote range arrested three persons from Raniber village under Rambha police station limit on Tuesday. Two persons Narayan Pradhan (55) and Tuna Pradhan (20) of the same village were court-forwarded.
