Vedanta’s smelter plant to be closed temporarily!

BHUBANESWAR: Following the closure of the Vedanta Aluminium Limited’s Lanjigarh refinery due to shortage of bauxite, the company officials informed that the company’s smelter plant at Jharsuguda will be closed after one month.

The Lanjigarh refinery was producing alumina after refining the bauxite and the alumina was used as raw material for the smelter plant at Jharsuguda to make aluminum. The refinery was the prime source of the smelter plant. After closing of the refinery on Saturday, it became a threat for the smelter plant as it was getting 70 per cent raw materials from the refinery. “The closing of the refinery at Lanjigarh would affect the smelter plant badly and it will function only one month,” said a top official of the company Abhijeet Pati.

The company sources said that the production capacity of the two smelter plants at Jharsuguda is 1.75 million tonne per year. The company has invested Rs 3,500 crore in the plants and around 15,000 people are depending on the plants directly or indirectly, stated the company.

It may be noted that the company closed its refinery at Lanjigarh temporarily on Saturday without any stock of bauxite to run the plant.
