Kui Samaj protests Kanhar’s arrest, observes bandh in Kandhamal

PHULBANI: The supporters and members of the Kui Samaj Samanwaya Samiti (KSSS), an outfit of the Kui tribes, called bandh in Kandhamal on Friday protesting the arrest of its secretary Lambodar Kanhar. Though the bandh didn’t get full support from the public, the communication and transportation system was affected and the business establishments were closed fearing the Kui Samaj supporters.

The bus services were paralysed during the bandh. Shops, market complexes downed their shutters supporting the call. The supporters of the KSSS demanded immediate release of their leader Kanhar who was arrested by the police from his residence on Thursday evening for attacking the other district’s candidates during SSA interview here.

On Tuesday, the candidates of different districts were beaten up by the Kui Samaj people near the DPC office. The attackers were chasing the candidates by shouting ‘outsiders go back’ and ‘you can not do job in Kandhamal’. The candidates were running here and there to save their life. Some candidates, including women and physically challenged candidates, got injury in the attack of the locals.

The police after arresting the leader produced him before SDJM Phulbani. SDJM rejected his bail plea. Police arrested him on this basis of FIR lodged by three complainants. As Kanhar is an advocate, the Bar Association protested his arrest. The police also searching for other accused involved in the matter.
