‘If Naxals stop liquor sale, why not Govt’


BHUBANESWAR: “If Naxal order compels the liquor vendors to stop liquor selling in Naxal affected areas, then why the Government fails to check illegal liquor selling in the State? Do we appeal Naxals to control this,” questioned an activist of Mada Mukti Abhiyan (MMA) here at a State-level meeting orginised by National Alliance of Women Odisha chapter (NAWO) with MMA protesting liquor vending in the State.

Condemning the hooch tragedy happened in Khurda and Cuttack district from February 6, which claimed 33 lives and visionless of six people after consuming killer brew. The members of MMA and other organisations said the Government are not listening their demands to check this illegal liquor vending in the State, for which hundreds of people have lost their lives during past years in Ganjam, Cuttack, Khurda, Rayagada and Bhadrak. Though, the Government had set up various inquiry commissions to probe on the hooch tragedies, it yet to follow the suggestions given by the respective commissions.

The members demanded the Government should check liquor selling completely in the State, Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim’s family affected by the hooch tragedy and quash the licenses of the medicine vendors who sale killer medicines in the name of liquor. Among others, NAWO president Pramila Swain, Lalita Missal and Prahlad Sinha were present.
