Gold price fails to dampen Diwali spirit



--State jewellery market witnesses Rs 120 cr business in Diwali

BHUBANESWAR: The skyrocketing price of gold failed to dampen the spirit of purchasing the yellow metal on the eve of Diwali, the festival of light. The jewellery market in the State witnessed an Rs 120 crore business on Monday, said the sources.

Purchasing of gold would bring happiness and wealth to home, according to an old myth, instigates a person to purchase the precious metal, said a jewellery shop owner in the city. The consumers purchased gold ornaments though it cost them Rs 32,800 per 10 gram (24k) and Rs 30, 870 per 10 gram (22k).

The jewellery shop owners announced discounts and offers not only on the gold ornaments but also diamond jewelleries. Due to varieties of ornaments with various designs, customers are increasing in the shops, said a city-based jewellery shop employee.

“Like every year, I along with my family come to the jewellery shop to buy gold ornament to wear on the auspicious day. We don’t believe in the so called myth, but it is an opportunity to get some offer from the jewellery shops,” said a consumer Sunita Mishra.
