Hooch tragedy: Naidu Commission holds 17th seating

CUTTACK: Justice AS Naidu Commission of Inquiry, which is probing the February 2012 Cuttack-Khurda districts liquor tragedy that claimed at least 40 lives, held its 17th hearing here on Saturday. Commission recorded the statements of former State drug controller Annada Shankar Das as the first witness of the hearing.

In his statement, Das said that 20 per cent or more alcohol concentration is permissible in the Epee carm medicine manufactured by the Eastern Pharmaceuticals Ltd as it is so oily in nature. He clarified that Epee carm could not be banned though it has high concentration of alcohol of 42 per cent in the medicine.

“The Drug Controller said that more than 20 per cent alcohol is a natural thing in the Epee carm medicine, but the advocates said during the hearing that there is no provision of allowing highly concentrated alcohol in the medicine. After the commission’s report that will be come to fore that which is true,” said Commission’s Secretary Kasinath Panigrahy.

The Commission would hold its next seating at Bhubaneswar and record the statement of the Police Commissionerate’s Zone-IV ACP Dillip Das.
