Slum kids celebrate safe Diwali with cine stars

BHUBANESWAR: Statistics says that the level of pollution that occurs due to Diwali which is known as festival of lights in our society causes maximum harm to underage children’s at large. The children living in urban slums are highly affected with the adverse impact of Diwali. To spread the message of a safe and green Diwali and healthy environment for young children; major youth groups of Bhubaneswar joined hands together yesterday and celebrated the Festival of Lights with the children living in urban slums.


A total of twelve youth led organizations working for different social causes in the city and students from different educational institutes volunteered for the causes and could bring smiles on the faces of more than 350 students of Salia Sahi. People living in Salia Sahi are highly under urban poverty. The kids over there are the victims of major health and other issues.

100 odd volunteers spent their whole day with the underprivileged kids and with various activities crated a festive fever inside the slum. The other slum dwellers and children joined them. Activities such as bungee jumping, mehndi, tattoo, wall painting, outdoor games, rangooli, and music by a local rock band, colouring of lamps and lightening them as well happened throughout the day. Ollywood actor Akash dasnayak also joined the volunteers and advised the kids and parents for a SAFE AND HEALTHY Diwali. Actor Samaresh Routray also joined the kids and celebrated this Diwali with cutting a huge cake having the message of Safe and healthy environment for children living in urban poverty. This event was supported by the "Humara Bachpan" campaign by BvLF working on early childhood issues in India.

A volunteer from BJB college, Balunkeswari Rout tells us that this was the best ever Diwali in her life. She and her friend Sucheta shows their satisfaction for spending a whole day with the innocent kids of Salia Sahi slum. Volunteers from organizations like We4U, Alive Creations, Uddan Odisha, VASA, YDF, CB, Diabetes, Bakul Foundation, Being Indian Foundation, NMYS, Vision Smart India, YFK and students from Utkal University, University Law College, BJB Collegem, Biju Patnaik College of Social Work, CSSR and IMS took part in the celebration.
