BHUBANESWAR:
A 35 years old female elephant was electrocuted after coming in contact with
high-tension electric wires in Dhenkanal district on the wee hours of Sunday,
forest official sources said.
According to the Divisional
Forest Officer P K Maharatha, the elephant came in contact with the live wires
and died when she was passing through the corridor in Mahabir
Road forest range on Saturday night. The local
people of the area spotted the carcass and informed the forest officials on
Sunday morning, Maharatha said, adding that an inquiry has been ordered into
the incident.
According to the locals, some
people have used the live electric wires to save their crops from the elephants
as they were damaging their paddy crops during a few days. They have been complaining
before the forest officials, but no one was responding them, the villagers
added.
Following the electrocution of
five elephants and a wild boar in Ganjam district last month, death of the
heritage animal in Dhenkanal district due to electrocution raised many
questions about the safety of the jumbos in the State as around 59 elephants
were killed within four years.
