Hooch tragedy: Naidu Commission holds 19th seating

CUTTACK: Justice AS Naidu Commission of Inquiry, which is probing the February 2012 liquor tragedy in Cuttack and Khurda that claimed at least 40 lives, held its 19th hearing here on Saturday. The commission recorded the statement of Assistant Drug Examiner Kishore Chandra Rath as the first witness of the hearing.

Rath said that three Epee carm medicine bottles were supplied to him as sample, but he didn’t find the objectionable component methyl alcohol in the medicine. After the required test he found that three components were there in the medicine in stead of six components, Rath said, adding, “The Epee carm medicine was not the reason behind the death of the people as methyl alcohol component was absent in the medicine.”

Another witness police officer Gurudas Kundu was not present during the hearing as he was out of the State. Suspended Excise Sub-Inspector Mrityunjay Behera and Assistant Drug Controller Jyotirmay Behera applied before the Commission for their re-appointment. The hearing of November 17 would be held on November 24, commission secretary Kasinath Panigrahy said.
