OKM hails Centre’s move of direct cash transfers to BPL families

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Krushak Mahasangha (OKM) welcomed the Central Government’s decision to pay subsidy on food in the accounts of BPL beneficiaries from April 2014. The Mahasangha also hailed the decision to pay subsidy price on fertiliser and petroleum products in the accounts of the beneficiaries.

The OKM members said that they had been demanding before the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Minister of Agriculture to pay subsidy money in the account of beneficiaries. Political leaders like Baijayant Panda and Bhupinder Singh had also raised their voice in favour of the scheme, the members added.

OKM president Bibhudhendra Pratap Das said the farmers would get benefit out of the new policy as they were facing the problem of distress sale of paddy every year due to black marketing of subsidised rice. “Most of the dealers were selling the subsidised rice in cheap rate in the market, for which reason, the rice millers and dealers were not purchasing rice as a result farmers were facing a lot of problem regarding the distress sale of paddy,” said Das, adding, “The new policy would bring transparency.”
