Engg student commits suicide, parents held college responsible

BHUBANESWAR: Students of the Mahaveer Engineering College on the outskirts of the city ransacked the college on Thursday following the death of their classmate who committed suicide jumping to the front of the running train at Lingaraj temple road here on Wednesday alleging college authorities’ rigid behaviour to allow him to sit in the semester examination. The parents demanded action against the college authorities.

In his suicide letter, deceased student Sanjeev Patnaik held the college responsible for his death. The third year student of Electronic Communication discipline could not sit in the fifth semester examination due to delay in payment of the dues. For which reason he committed suicide, Sanjeev stated in his letter.

Following the death of Sanjeev, his classmates protesting the college authorities ransacked the college office and class rooms. “College authorities are responsible for the death of my brother. A proper investigation is needed to book the culprits under law,” said deceased’s brother Sambit Patnaik. While the BPUT Students Union members demanded proper action against the college authorities for not allowing the student to sit in the examination.

The college principal rubbished the allegation. College Principal Subrat Kumar Sahu said the student was not coming to the college and he never approached him to sit in the examination.

The GRP has lodged an unnatural death case after getting the body of the deceased student.
