Police clueless in old woman murder case in city

--Senior citizens meet Police Commissioner on security

BHUBANESWAR: As the police kept fumbling in getting in clue to the murder of an elderly woman in Acharya Vihar on Thursday night, a group of senior citizens on Saturday here met Police Commissioner Sunil Roy appealing him to take urgent steps for the security of senior citizens leaving in the city alone.

Still now the Commissionerate Police is clueless about the murderers of an elderly woman Jyoshna Devi wife of retired superintendent engineer Kunjabihari Panigrahy of Acharya Vihar in city. Critically injured Panigrahy’s ondition is very critical and he is going under treatment in a private hospital in city, doctors said.

The police have started checking the diaries, documents and important papers in the house including the mobile calls to establish some proofs which would help the police to trace out the culprits. The police also told the students, who were living in the hostel run by the old man Panigrahy, to not to leave the hostel without notice. Investigation is continuing into the case, no arrest has been made so far in the case, the police sources said.

“The miscreants looted one Laptop, one Apple iPad, two mobile phones and a DVD player from the house, but they didn’t take my grandma’s necklace from her neck. We think some known persons have done this,” said Panigrahy’s grandson Sidharth Choudhury.

On the other hand, the senior citizens living in the city alone met the Police Commissioner to discuss about their security. As their children are living outside, they are living alone and some anti-socials are taking benefit out of their loneliness.

“We discussed with the Police Commissioner about the security of senior citizens inside and outside of their house in the city. He assured us to help us and directed their officials to talk with different senior citizen associations to make awareness programmes about the security of the elderly persons,” said Senior Citizen’s Association president Krupasindhu Sahu.

It may be noted that an elderly woman Pushpalata Jena was brutally killed when she was alone in her home at Barmunda in the city on February 1 last year. In July 27, 2010, Panda Nursing Home owner Dr Brahmananda Panda was also killed in Kharvelnagar in city by some miscreants.
