SP urges CM to intervene in Lower Suktel movement


BHUBANESWAR: The Samajwadi Party Odisha State Committee on Wednesday urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to intervene in the matter to negotiate with the people sitting in the hunger strike for implementation of the Lower Suktel Irrigation Project at Balangir.

The party president Rabi Behera said the foundation stone for the said project was laid by the Chief Minister 11 years back on 2001, when the project cost was 217 crore rupees which is now reached at the level of 1076 crore rupees. If the said project is implemented it will cater to the need of drinking water of Balangir and will be able to provide irrigation facility for the farmers of Balangir and Sonepur, he added.

He also said the districts with an irrigation potentiality would be increased from present 3 per cent to 27 per cent. It would also be beneficial to growth of forest from 11 per cent to 33 per cent. Though around 10 thousand households of 26 villages would be displaced, proper rehabilitation facility can solve the problems with the active intervention of the Chief Minister, he added.
